Nettie Gratz Avila

Nettie Gratz Avila

1894 – 1982

Manny’s wife’s name was Nettie. She was a very active woman, very involved in the orthodox Jewish synagogue on County Street in New Bedford. It was very unusual for a mixed marriage in those days.

Manny and Nettie brought up a niece and a nephew. Their names were Arthur and Ada Cole. I never knew what happened to Ada, but Arthur spent most of his years around the New Bedford area. I believe he went to Harvard or another Ivy League school.

They were very fine, generous people…some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet.

Based on an oral history interview with Barry Federman.
