More Information
After several years of preparation, the opening of our Sakonnet History Project exhibits and the publication of the first of two new books is just a little over a month away. We hope you will join us at our Exhibit Preview Party on Friday, June 27 from 6 to 8 PM, and at this important stage of the project, we ask that you please consider supporting this event as generously as possible.
- June 27 – Opening of Awashonks’ Garden – a permanent outdoor exhibit sharing the history of the Sakonnet Wampanoag People, featuring native plants and seven works of public art by Wampanoag artists. Ticketed event.
- June 27 – Opening of Sakonnet Belongings: Wampanoag Art Past & Present – a special two-year exhibit featuring the work of fourteen contemporary Wampanoag artists as well as historic pieces from local collections. Ticketed event.Â
- June 27 – Publication of volume one of Reconnections: Essays and Art by Wampanoag and Narragansett Knowledge Keepers.
- June 28 – Family Day. All exhibits free and open to the public.
- October 18 – Publication of volume two of Reconnections: A History of the Sakonnet Wampanoag People.
- July-April – Native-led tours, demonstrations, and talks.
Fundraising for the Sakonnet History Project began in 2023, and we are humbled by the outpouring of community support. To date gifts and grants have totaled $290,000 in support of this $375,000 project. Since we first asked for your support, the costs of the project have grown as we expanded our vision for Awashonks’ Garden, established a garden maintenance fund, committed to publishing a two-volume set instead of a single book, collaborated with additional Wampanoag and Narragansett essayists and artists, and unfortunately, lost one of our major grants due to the cutbacks at the National Endowment for the Humanities.
We ask that you help us meet these needs by purchasing tickets to the Exhibit Preview Party at one of our sponsorship levels or by making a donation to the project.
Invitations to the Preview Party will be mailed out soon, but you may purchase your tickets in advance and/or send a gift using the enclosed form, calling 401-635-4035, or using the link on our website www.littlecompton.org. We expect this event to sell out, and we hope to see you there.
