Agnes Domandi Langdon

Agnes Domandi Langdon

1927 – 2018

Agnes was born in Dessau, Germany, in 1927, the eldest of five children. She and her family survived the second world war in Dessau and Dresden. After the war, Agnes attended the University of Leipzig and received her degree in Russian language, then worked as a Russian interpreter for two years while studying for a degree in English language. She and her family eventually escaped from Soviet East Germany to the West.

Agnes emigrated to the US at the age of 24, and met her first husband, Mario Domandi, with whom she had a daughter, Mary-Charlotte. She earned her Ph.D. from New York University in German literature in 1965 and taught at Vassar College and Bard College. In 1973 she married her second husband, George D. Langdon, Jr. They moved to Colgate University in 1978, where he was president and she taught in the German department. Later she worked at New York University as Director of International Projects. She retired with George to Little Compton, RI, in 1997, where she lived until George’s death in 2011.

She loved classical music and was a lifelong student, taking classes and attending reading groups in both English and German. She loved spending time in conversation with her friends and family, and she found peace and solace in nature, most of all by the sea in Little Compton. She made many new friends in  Santa Fe, where she lived next door to her daughter during the last decade of her life, but also spent as much time as she could in Little Compton with her beloved friends and family. Toward the end of her life she formed a deep bond with her son-in-law, classical musician Roberto Capocchi, with whom she shared many hours listening to music.

Agnes died peacefully at home on July 23, 2018, with her daughter by her side.
Rest in peace, dear Agnes!
